Letter to the U.S. Department of Justice (1989)

November 3, l989

BY TELECOPIER

Mr. Barry Weinberg
Acting Chief
Voting Section
Civil Rights Division
U.S. Department of Justice
320 1st Street, NW Washington, DC 20001

Dear Mr. Weinberg,

We are writing to request that the Justice Department monitor the election to be held on November 7, l989 for City Council in the 11th District, Bronx, New York under the Federal Observer Program as per the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Allegations of irregularities in the 1982 and 1985 elections for Member of the City Council in the 11th District of New York City have been brought to our attention. They indicate that it would be appropriate to send federal observers from your office. We urge you to honor this request. Our concern is that the voters of the 11th Council District can participate in a fair and democratic election free from harassment, intimidation and fraud.

Very truly yours,

Lenora B. Fulani, National Chairperson, New Alliance Party
Alvaader Frazier, Esq., International People's Law Institution
Dr. Lois Holtzman, Association of Progressive Helping Professionals
Dr. Mohammad T. Mehdi, American Arab Relations Committee
Rafael Mendez, Candidate for City Council President, New York City
Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund
Reverend Al Sharpton
Barbara Taylor, Principal and Founder Barbara Taylor School, and Candidate for Manhattan Borough President, New York City.
